A new Star Wars: Battlefront game is reportedly in development, and this time it's not one studio but two. Variety cites multiple sources claiming Battlefield and original Battlefront developer DICE is teaming up with Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi studio Respawn to build it.
EA hasn't confirmed the game by name, but a staff memo did acknowledge that Respawn and DICE are collaborating on something new, without spelling out what. That lines up with days of rumblings, starting with an Electronic Gaming Monthly report naming Disney as the one shopping Battlefront 3 around to studios, and Bungie as another name in the mix. Wardogs studio head Joe Brammer then posted on X that it was actually DICE and Respawn working together, which now looks like it was right on the money.
This would be the first Battlefront since 2017's Battlefront 2, a launch so rough its loot box mess helped trigger gambling-adjacent legislation worldwide. DICE spent years clawing that game back into players' good graces, stripping the loot boxes and reworking the systems before wrapping up support in 2020. EA was also said to have canned a Battlefront 2 follow-up back in 2022, so this report suggests the series isn't dead after all, just quietly rebuilding behind the scenes.
It's also worth noting this would be the first Battlefront published under EA's new ownership, after Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund led a $55 billion buyout over the summer. Nothing's official yet, and two studios with serious shooter pedigree is the kind of pairing that should excite fans.
The catch is Battlefield 6, which turned out to be a disappointing Call of Duty clone. If DICE takes that same approach into Battlefront, what comes out of this collaboration is very worrying, and the herd has every reason to stay wary until EA shows something real.
