Don't hold your breath for Helldivers 3. Arrowhead chief creative officer Johan Pilestedt says the only version of that game worth making is one so different from Helldivers 2 that the two could happily sit on shelves together.
Pilestedt tells Rock Paper Shotgun that 95% of the studio's roughly 150 people are still heads-down on Helldivers 2, with just a small team quietly prototyping whatever comes next. No threequel is in development, and Pilestedt sounds in no hurry to change that.
It only makes sense to make a distinct sequel if it's so different that both games can exist side by side. For now, making Helldivers 2 better every day makes way more sense than throwing away its momentum.
His reasoning leans less on sequel fatigue and more on how he sees the live service landscape right now. Pilestedt argues a sequel resets everything and forces players to start from zero, while a continuation turns a game into a long-term hobby, the kind of thing you drift away from and wander back into years later, like Lego or Warhammer. He also pushed back on treating players as a short-term cash grab, framing the community itself as the engine keeping Helldivers 2 alive through memes, friend invites, and sheer stubbornness.
Helldivers 2 is still pulling in over 47,000 concurrent players on Steam alone two years out, so Arrowhead's "why fix what isn't broken" logic checks out for now. Whether that holds once the next prototype actually shows its face is a different question entirely.
