A hacker going by "Jordy" has collected a $50,000 bounty from Sony for reporting a PS5 hypervisor bug he found using AI. The report went through HackerOne, which pays researchers to disclose flaws privately so companies can patch them.
The timing is the sore point. Google security engineer Andy Nguyen, known as theflow0, had reportedly known about the bug for a while and wanted it kept quiet until after GTA 6 launched on November 19, so players could update their consoles and still boot Linux. Jordy says he reported it after another researcher found the same bug with AI, arguing that anyone with an LLM could find it.
The bug affects PS5 firmware from 13.60 up to 14.00, and Sony has since pushed a firmware update. Jordy has taken plenty of heat online, though he doesn't seem to care much. Asked whether his tweet about the payout had riled people up, he said, "Probably but that was the point."
