Gaming Headset

Everything you need to know to choose the right headphones, without being fooled by marketing and the specs on the packaging.

🎧 Wired & Wireless 💰 17€ à 225€

The gaming headset market is a minefield. Specs pumped up with helium, “7.1 surround sound” that means nothing on a stereo headset, 2-cent microphones sold as professional streaming tools. The pack has sorted it out for you.

This guide covers it all: the criteria that really matter, the wired versus wireless debate, and an honest selection of headphones now available in the shop, by budget. No bullshit, no out-of-stock products slipped in on the sly.

🎯 The criteria that really count

Before looking at prices, you need to understand what the specs mean, and above all what they don't mean.

📏
Driver size
Manufacturers love to advertise “50mm” as a marketing argument. Driver size is no guarantee of quality: design and materials count for much more.
Bigger ≠ better. Looking for reviews on audio quality, not size.
🎵
Frequency response
In theory: the wider the range, the better. In practice: 20Hz-20kHz corresponds to the limits of the human ear. Anything beyond that is just wind.
Aim for 20Hz-20kHz. The rest is marketing.
🌊
7.1 surround sound
On stereo headphones (two speakers), 7.1 is simulated via software. This is useful for hearing where your footsteps are coming from in an FPS, but can be annoying for music and dialogue.
Activate it only for shooters, deactivate it for everything else.
🔕
Passive insulation
Foam earpieces that physically block out external noise. Underrated and often more effective than low-end active noise reduction.
Memory foam = better insulation + more comfort.
🎙️
Directivity
Unidirectional (or cardioid): picks up only your voice, rejects surrounding noise. Omnidirectional: picks up everything around you. For gaming, you want unidirectional.
Avoid omnidirectional microphones if you're playing in a noisy room.
🎚️
Noise reduction
Some headsets incorporate active noise reduction on the microphone (different from the headset itself). This filters out background noise such as a fan or air conditioning.
Essential if you're playing with the microphone open in a competitive game.
🔧
Retractable microphone
Fits inside the helmet when not in use. Practical, less exposed to shocks. Often more solid than low-end articulated-arm mics.
Less positioning flexibility, but generally more reliable over the long term.
📱
Compatibility
USB headphones are often plug-and-play on PCs but limited on consoles. A 3.5mm jack headset works everywhere, but has no advanced functions on a PC without a sound card.
3.5mm jack = universal compatibility. USB or dongle = better functions, less flexibility.
🏋️
Weight
Over 300g, long sessions become painful. Wireless headphones with built-in batteries are often heavier than their wired counterparts.
Aim for less than 300g for 3h+ sessions without discomfort.
🛋️
Type of bearings
Faux leather: good insulation, heat build-up. Velour/fabric: breathes better, less insulating. Memory foam in either: superior long-term comfort.
If you sweat easily, prefer fabric. For insulation, faux leather.
🔩
Arch
Look for a headband that adjusts progressively (not just a few notches) and stays in place. A self-adjusting headband (one that naturally adapts to your head) is a real plus.
Always test the flexibility of the rollbar before buying if possible.
👓
Glasses compatibility
Often forgotten. Earpieces that are too tight squeeze the temples of your glasses and make any session uncomfortable after 30 minutes.
If you wear glasses, look for “glasses-friendly” labels or softer fabric pads.
🔌
3.5mm jack
Works on everything: PC, PS5, Xbox, Switch, mobile. No latency, no batteries to manage. The most universal and reliable connection.
Perfect if you play on several different platforms.
🔷
USB (type A or C)
Plug-and-play on PC, enabling advanced audio functions without an external sound card. Less universal on consoles: check compatibility before you buy.
USB-C is on the rise and is more common on new consoles.
📡
Wireless dongle (2.4GHz)
Proprietary wireless connection via a small USB receiver. Virtually zero latency, ideal for competitive gaming. Typical range of 10 to 15 metres.
The best compromise between freedom of movement and audio performance.
🔵
Bluetooth
Universal, practical for mobile and multipoint (simultaneous connection to several devices). Slightly higher latency than the dongle, but rarely a problem except in competitive FPS.
Perfect for RPGs, role-playing games and music. Avoid it for highly competitive shooters.

⚡ Wired or wireless?

The question on everyone's mind. The honest answer: It depends on you and how you play.. These are the bare facts.

🔌 Wired
  • + No audio latency
  • + No battery to manage
  • + Prices often more affordable for the same quality
  • + Compatible everywhere (3.5 mm jack)
  • Cables that can impede movement
  • Less practical if you're playing away from your setup
  • Cable = point of long-term fragility
📡 Wireless
  • + Total freedom of movement
  • + Perfect for sofas or large rooms
  • + Recent models have solid battery life (20h+)
  • Battery to recharge (always at the wrong time)
  • Heavier than a wired equivalent
  • Higher price for comparable audio quality
  • Marginally higher latency (2.4GHz dongle remains excellent)
💡 If you mainly play competitive FPS at the office : wired or 2.4GHz dongle. If you play in the living room or on the move : Bluetooth wireless or dongle. Both are perfectly valid.
